For an apartment with low, wooden ceilings my father and I designed a low-profile spotlight made out of beech (Fig. 1). The base is hollowed out and houses the electrical connection and a small fuse. The base is mounted to the ceiling via magnetic coupling to a round metal base plate that is directly screwed to the ceiling. This form of connection not only facilitates a rather effortless installation but also allows to rotate the spotlights freely. The square sockets are mounted via two nested aluminium tubes that allow adjustment of the spotlight direction via friction fit. The electrical sockets are GU 10 and receive 220V LED lights that can be directly run from the mains.
